THE DIFFERENT WAYS
OF CONSUMING CBD

As CBD garners more mainstream popularity, a variety of preparations have emerged. This proliferation has left many consumers confused about the many ways to take CBD.

In this chapter, we will cover some of the popular methods of taking CBD and the unique qualities that make them different.

Although many CBD preparations bear a resemblance to THC goods, it is simply because they are efficient methods for getting cannabinoids into the body. All of Hempure’s products are third party lab tested to verify zero THC, accurate strength of CBD and the presence of other vital compounds and terpenes. Remember that CBD is not psychoactive and cannot get you “high.”

WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TAKE CBD AND INCORPORATE IT INTO YOUR LIFE?

Here’s a list of some of the most common methods below, but first, it is important to understand the different ways that the body absorbs CBD:

UPTAKE CAN OCCUR BY CROSSING INTO THE BLOODSTREAM VIA
  • Mucous Membrane ( I.E. Under the tongue )
  • Inhalation
  • The liver after being broken down or
  • Topically through the skin, which does not include crossing the bloodstream to reach the CB1 receptor

Each of these methods will have different uptake times and last for varying durations. Topical and edible methods will have slightly different effects, but offer certain benefits that inhalation and administration via mucous membrane lack.

When any supplement is digested it moves from the stomach to the liver to be broken down, and then moves into the bloodstream. Typically, during this process, a large portion is lost and not absorbed.

CBD SUPPORTS A HEALTHY MENTAL STATE

The portion that is lost before being uptaken and imparting an effect is referred to as lost in “First-Pass Metabolism.”

Though digestion can reduce thepotency of a supplement, it extends the active duration.

Administration methods that skip “first pass” metabolism, such as vaping, may lead to greater uptake, and conversely will last for shorter periods of time. THC is an exclusion to this rule, as it will be both more potent and last longer when broken down by the liver, becoming 11-hydroxy-cannabinol in the process.

CBD is believed to follow the typical model, and is reduced by first pass metabolism.

Topicals

Popular Examples: Balm, lotion, salves, roll-ons and body oils.

WHEN CBD IS APPLIED TO THE SKIN, IT DOESN’T DIRECTLY ENTER THE BLOODSTREAM.

However, it is still able to affect the ECS. The skin has endocannabinoid receptors, specifically a large amount of CB2 receptors. There are more CB2 receptors on your skin than anywhere else in your body, and topical preparations are able to interact with them.

By applying a topical, you can concentrate the product’s effects locally, rather than having it dispersed throughout the body. This works best for addressing site-specific problems of muscular or skin issues. CBD balm can provide wonderful relief for a variety of circumstances.

As an antioxidant and inflammatory, it also helps maintain beautiful vibrant skin. It is best to try topicals wherever you may be experiencing discomfort or want to see an improvement, and many people with skin sensitivities find that CBD topicals work well to manage symptoms.

CBD OIL

Popular Examples: MCT infusions, Alcohol infusions

CBD OIL TINCTURES ARE ONE OF THE MOST COMMON WAYS OF CONSUMING CBD.

CBD oils are full of vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3s. They tend to provide a quick response within the body due to their high absorption rate.

Oils are placed under the tongue and absorbed primarily in the mouth. By using absorption via a mucous membrane, THEY BYPASS THE “FIRST-PASS” METABOLISM OF EDIBLES AND REACH THE BRAIN IN HIGHER CONCENTRATIONS. It is possible for other mucous membranes to uptake CBD as well, but the mouth tends to be the safest. Uptake can take as little as 1 minute, but for some people may be 2-3. The effects of tinctures can come on within 5-20 minutes and tend to last 2-4 hours.

One of the best things about using an oil is that they can be added to food or beverages, while still being absorbed in your mouth as you chew or drink, opening up endless variety for application. Add them to smoothies, dressings, sauces, and your favorite dishes to get an additional boost of CBD in your day.

Vape

Popular Examples: E-liquid, CO2 distillate, CBD isolate

VAPING CBD IS THE MOST RAPID AND EFFECTIVE WAY OF EXPERIENCING CBD RESULTS IN THE BODY.

When inhaled, CBD passes immediately into the bloodstream and makes the quickest exchange over the blood-brain barrier to reach our CB1 receptors, typically within a few seconds. It will have the fullest potency of effect, much like oil tinctures. The effect will last approximately two hours.

If you already vape, you can add CBD vape oil to your existing e-liquid and vape away.

For those who don’t vape or are unfamiliar with vaping, a vaporizer is a device that instantaneously heats up a liquid until it gets to a temperature that causes the liquid to become a gas. The gas is then inhaled. The liquid used within a vaporizer is known as e-liquid. This is seen as far superior to other inhalation methods because there is no burnt carbon material or plant matter. Nothing is technically being “smoked”, only carried on water vapor.

You can add CBD vape oil to regular vape e-liquid or vape CBD oil on its own. Be sure to avoid CBD oil with any unnecessary additives. A variety of vape devices are available, but it is best to use ones that come from reputable companies and are easy to reload.

edibles

Popular Examples: Gummies, hard candies, chocolates, drinks

EDIBLES ARE ONE OF THE MOST ENJOYABLE WAYS OF CONSUMING CBD.

Not only do you get a tasty treat, but you get a beneficial supplement that can improve your life.

Edibles tend to take the longest for their effects to be felt. While they take a while to kick in, they also last the longest. This is due to the aforementioned “first-pass” metabolism issue. Their onset is between 45 minutes-one hour and can last from four to six hours.

Edibles take the longest to kick in, but their effects last the longest.

Gummies are one of the most common types of edibles. They can be easily divided to determine optimal dosage and are ideal for supplementing on the go.

capsules / softgels

PILL PREPARATIONS ARE ANOTHER OF THE EASIEST AND MOST CONVENIENT WAYS OF CONSUMING CBD.

Softgels are small gelatin encapsulated oil that you pop in your mouth. The oil content will actually help reduce some of the potency loss of in the liver.

The effects of softgels are similar to those of edibles. They take around an hour or two to begin feeling and last around four to six hours, depending on your genetics, metabolism, the time of day, and what has been eaten prior. Nano-emulsified soft gels are formulated to have smaller particles that absorb quicker.

However, be cautioned if you have a sorbitol sensitivity as some softgels contain it and can be a stomach irritant, though this is a rare occurrence.

WHAT TYPE IS BEST FOR YOU?

chapter6-img9.jpg

EVERYONE’S ANSWER WILL BE DIFFERENT.

Do you want something that is easy that you can take with you everywhere? Softgels and gummies may be the answer for you.

If you want an immediate effect that kicks in exactly when you want it to, consider vaping.

The most popular and versatile are CBD oil drops or tinctures. The best way to figure out which way of taking CBD is right for you is to try out a few methods and see which ones suit your needs.

Many people get multiple types and use them in different situations depending on how they’re feeling.

It might be best to think of the different CBD preparations as different tools within the same toolbox. Each will have their optimal setting and application depending on the situation at hand.
