CBD offers many benefits to anyone looking to support their health. The intention of taking CBD is not to eliminate stressors, but to support and change your state of mind and body.

CBD moderates the distractions within your body to bring calm and balanced homeostasis.

When any of the systems or functions of the body get out of whack, CBD works to get them functioning properly.

If you think of your endocannabinoid system like a car, CBD is not the fuel that propels the car, but rather the motor oil that helps keep the system operating smoothly and efficiently. As we saw in chapter two, the endocannabinoid system is an essential player in the body. Every system of your body needs to be in balance for you to experience optimal health. When systems get severely out of balance, illness and disorders begin. The endocannabinoid system is constantly working to bring balance. In modern times, we have many stressors on our minds and adding a CBD supplement can be an effective way to combat that stress. By taking CBD, you’re giving your endocannabinoid system a boost and the best chance to function at its best.

Many people who start taking CBD find that their emotional reaction to life gets less intense or rebounds much quicker. Things that used to be difficult or frustrating become a delightful challenge. That may be playing with your kids, enjoying yourself while exercising, or just getting out of bed eager to enjoy the day. CBD is the perfect way to bring about a new sense of ease into your life.

More and more research indicates that consuming CBD could be an effective way to assist the lifestyles of those suffering from chronic unease. The endocannabinoid system helps you to “relax, eat, sleep, forget, and protect.” The ECS is responsible for regulating many functions in the body including pain, sleep, the immune system, and mood. In every part of the body, the ECS performs different tasks, but it always works to achieve the same goal: homeostasis and the continuation of a stable internal body even though everything outside the body will be continuously functioning. CBD works by encouraging the body to use its endocannabinoids more effectively. As Dr. Ethan Russo, an expert on CBD that has studied it for more than two decades, stated:

“If you don’t have enough endocannabinoids, you have pain where there shouldn’t be pain.”

Anxiety disorders are the most common form of mental illness. More than 40 million people in the United States suffer from anxiety. Many of the prescriptions available for anxiety come with a range of unwanted side effects. Anxiolytic and antidepressant drugs have become a popular solution for many suffering from anxiety. While these drugs do help some people, others do not receive positive results and some can become addicted to medications like Xanax and Valium. CBD holds the potential to promote an optimal state of mental health.

How does CBD work in the body to support mental functioning?

CBD acts as a 5-HT1A agonist. An agonist is a substance that initiates a response when it interacts with a receptor2. 5-HT1A is a serotonin receptor in the body. This protein exists on the surface of a cell or in a neuron. When a chemical binds to it, they cause a change of to occur by opening a channel or firing a chemical. The 5-HT1A receptor and serotonin appear to modulate mood, social behavior, appetite, memory, and sexual desire. Low levels of serotonin have been linked to both anxiety and depression. Antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs target the serotonin system and work by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin. This allows more serotonin to be available in the brain. Many people suffering from anxiety and depression have a hippocampus that is smaller than normal. The hippocampus is an area of the brain that is important in forming new memories and cognition. Some research indicates that CBD may aid in the regeneration of neurons in this region of the brain, thus leading to a larger hippocampus.3 CBD also affects the Endocannabinoid system, or ECS, in the body. The ECS is possibly the most important system in the body for maintaining and building health. Endocannabinoids and the receptors they bind to are found throughout the body in the brain, glands, immune cells, organs, and many different connective tissues. Although in each part of the body the endocannabinoid system performs different tasks, it always has the same objective in mind, homeostasis. The ECS works to keep a stable internal environment as many changes and variations occur in the external environment. CBD works within the ECS by stimulating receptors and eliminating enzymes that inhibit the body’s natural cannabinoids from functioning properly. These processes allow the body to more easily achieve homeostasis and support a better mental state.

CBD For Skincare

CBD shows promise in helping maintain glowing skin.4 Skin blemishes are caused when the skin begins producing too much of a lipid known as sebum. Hair follicles and the glands on the skin both have endocannabinoid receptors. In a study carried out at the University of Debrecen, scientists applied CBD to skin cells and discovered that CBD reduced the production of the lipids that cause many different skin irritations.5 Considering that the causes of the overproduction of the lipids that cause acne are multifaceted, it can be difficult to find the exact cause of skin problems in many cases. CBD also does not appear to harm the cells that are producing the lipids responsible for damaging skin. Many acne medications work by harming the cells that are over producing lipids, which results in dry and damaged skin.6 CBD regulates the production of lipids, rather than killing the cells that are overproducing.

As we mentioned in Chapter Two, the endocannabinoid system acts in coordination with the microbiome in your digestive system. When the ECS is boosted with endocannabinoids, it functions better and the microbiome also exhibits signs of improved function. By taking CBD, you’re allowing your body to produce more of its own natural endocannabinoids and to use them at the right speed. With a more abundant endocannabinoid tone, your ECS has a better chance of operating as it should. Unfortunately, the endocannabinoid system can also get overstimulated. When this happens, it seems as though many different problems can occur. Some studies have discovered a link between an overexcited immune system and overeating, obesity, and diabetes. CBD is an adaptogen. When the ECS is overstimulated, CBD works to bring it back down to a calmer level. If the ECS is understimulated, CBD amps it up to get it to optimal levels. Studies indicate that the endocannabinoid system and the gut microbiome are intertwined. By taking probiotics, rats saw an increase in the number of endocannabinoids present in their gut. The study also discovered that an increase in endocannabinoids in the gut resulted in decreased abdominal pain.7 The endocannabinoid system and CBD also support a natural level of inflammation and promote a healthy gut-barrier function.8 Healthy gut-barrier function leads to a stable metabolism, a healthy mental state, and healthy digestion.

CBD shows an enormous amount of promise for helping those with nausea.9 The full way in which CBD impacts nausea and vomiting is not fully understood, however there is some evidence to indicate that CBD could produce some anti-nausea type effects.10 Current research shows that both the endocannabinoid system and the 5-HT1A receptors that CBD interacts with play a role in the creation and elimination of nausea. In a clinical trial of Sativex, a drug that contains a mixture of both THC and CBD, nausea was reduced in patients in comparison to a placebo group.11 One of the first medicinal properties of cannabis to be discovered was its ability to inhibit nausea and vomiting. Many researchers believe that the endocannabinoid system plays a major role in the regulation of nausea. While little research has been done on humans that examines the relationship between the endocannabinoid system and vomiting, there have been a few studies that examined the ways in which endocannabinoids impact motion sickness. One study found that both anandamide and 2-AG, the body’s two primary endocannabinoids, levels in the body were changed after people went through various types of extreme flight maneuvers. For those that experienced motion sickness during and after the flight, the activity of their endocannabinoid receptors was reduced while those that did not experience motion sickness saw no change in the activity of their endocannabinoid receptors.12

One of the most popular reasons people choose to start taking CBD is because of the way it helps them get to sleep. CBD supports a better night’s sleep and can help you fall asleep quicker and easier. One review of many different studies that examined CBD and sleep came to some interesting conclusions. CBD could offer relief to many people suffering from insomnia.13 It also seems to be capable of reducing daytime sleepiness. One study examined people who had insomnia and how CBD could help. They found that people who had received CBD slept much longer throughout the night.14 It also showed that CBD could reduce the amount of daytime sleepiness people felt.
The strange thing about CBD is that is does not make you sleepy, but can help you sleep better. It works as a wakefulness agent during the day and can increase alertness, so don’t worry that you will get sleepy if you take it during the day. Ever have trouble sleeping because you’re stressed out about a big project at work? Have too many tasks on your plate and stay up wondering if you’ll be able to finish them all? Because CBD can act to support the stress response in your body, it also can help people who have trouble sleeping because they are stressed out. People that suffer from all types of chronic pain may have trouble sleeping for obvious reasons. One study found that CBD could help to improve sleep in those patients suffering from pain associated with arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and neuropathic pain.15

If you’ve been feeling a little bit off lately, or just not quite yourself, CBD may be the answer you’ve been looking for. The balance that CBD provides can help you feel more like yourself. Whether you’ve been feeling overworked on the job, or just don’t feel like you are connecting with your family and friends like you once did, CBD may be the thing that gets you back in the swing of things. CBD works to balance the levels of endocannabinoids in the body. Anandamide, also known as the “bliss molecule,” works within the brain to make sure you feel your best. Released following exercise, meditation, yoga, and unstructured play, anandamide works to give you the great feelings associated with all of those activities. CBD acts to make sure your body has a proper amount of anandamide. When it does, you’ll feel healthy, blissful, and like your authentic self. The effects of CBD are subtle but profound. They seem to rest in the background, like a light blanket softly draped over your nervous system. Unlike alcohol or other drugs, you won’t necessarily feel the effects immediately, but with regular use you will notice a shift in your mindset and a better sense of wellbeing.
